A passion

At 19, Marie travelled to Jamaica for two months, during which she took part in a volunteering programme. The trip, organised and supervised by one of the largest agencies in this field, turned out to be disappointing. While the intention to help and discover a new culture was very much there, the tasks were poorly defined, the impact on the ground was unclear, and the volunteering felt more like a pre-packaged experience than a genuine commitment. The lack of financial transparency from the organisation left a bitter impression, and she returned to Switzerland with a sense of something unfinished.

Marie then chose to go back to Jamaica on her own and became involved with a local nursery school. What was meant to be a three-month stay eventually turned into two years. Since then, she has returned regularly to spend time on the island that holds a special place in her heart.

The idea of creating a human-sized organisation offering a different way to experience Jamaica began to take shape. In 2026, Marie started the activities of My Jamrock Project, with the intention of offering stays that are closely connected to local realities, built on respect, exchange and meaningful engagement, just as she would have wished to experience during her first trip.

A mission

The mission of My Jamrock Project is to offer an alternative to traditional tourism by offering stays in Jamaica that include volunteering opportunities. This way of travelling is part of a more sustainable approach and allows you to combine cultural discovery with meaningful engagement.

Volunteer projects are organised in partnership with local organisations and stakeholders, ensuring they respond to real needs on the ground. Volunteers also have plenty of time to explore the island’s highlights during their free time. By the end of their experience, each traveller will have discovered Jamaica in its most authentic form, while making a positive impact within the community.
